General Description of the Committee
The Engineers Nova Scotia Student Affairs Committee (SAC) acoordinates and manages all student services. Engineers Nova Scotia Administers a number of programs for Engineering Students and provides Speakers to Schools and other interested groups to talk about Engineering and Technology, as well as act as Judge at Science Fairs.

Core Function - Promote the engineering profession and Engineers Nova Scotia to students at all levels. Providing information regarding the engineering profession and promoting the profession and engineering organizations to students at all levels.
Composition of Committee
Not less than three members at large, a member from Dalhousie University faculty, a student member representing Dalhousie University Engineering Undergraduate Society and a representative from each of the Associated Universities.
Role of Committee
To recommend and implement award programs to students at all levels to make students aware of the professional association to promote Engineers Nova Scotia among engineering students to study and make recommendations relating to services for students at all levels to support appropriate activities at Dalhousie University and the Associated Universities to maintain and continue liaisons with the Nova Scotia Department of Education guidance councilors and teachers to maintain a list of members willing to promote Engineers Nova Scotia and engineering through Career Day participation and other speaking events

Services
The Student Affairs Committee's mandate is to provide information to students and educators regarding the engineering profession and to promote engineering as a career opportunity at the appropriate levels. To fulfill this mandate, the Committee participates in and/or supports various activities throughout the year. These activities are divided into two major groups: funding activities; and promotional activities.
Funding Activities
In the past year, the SAC has distributed, from a total budget of just over $45,000, a total of $23,000 is paid in Scholarships and Bursaries to students at Dalhousie University and Associated Universities, in recognition of achievement in both academic work and extracurricular participation. This was done under the Dalhousie University Awards and Scholarship Program. $6000 is directed towards funding Engineering Undergraduate Society activities and student sponsorships.
Promotional Activities
The opportunity to meet with and discuss the engineering profession with students and educators are important promotional activities for the SAC. To achieve this the SAC (with the support of other committees and individual engineers throughout the Province) provided:
· speakers in the classroom at the high schools;
· table top displays at high school (and other) career days/fairs;
· judges for Science Fairs;
· an information booth at Dalhousie University on registration day;
· a wine and cheese mixer for students and professionals at Dalhousie University;
· and assistance on the preparation of suitable display boards.

Student Award Recipients 2009
On October 1st, 2009 Engineers Nova Scotia Scholarships and Awards were presented at a reception held at the Association's office. The
event was attended by most of the Award Recipients and their invited guests, and included a congratulatory message from Engineers Nova Scotia's newly elected President, Dan MacDonald, P.Eng.

The Engineers Nova Scotia Student Affairs Committee is active in the promotion of its profession and would like to play a stronger role in the promotion of math and science throughout all grades in the public school system. We have a number of resources, programs and activities that are available to assist teachers and educators including:

Events
National Engineering Month takes place during the Month of March. CLICK HERE for the official website.
"NEM" is a month long celebration designed to:
· increase awareness of the importance of engineering and technology in our everyday lives, and;
· encourage young people to consider a career in engineering
Each year during National Engineering month, hundreds of volunteers from all across Nova Scotia participate and organize events that are both educational and entertaining and can be enjoyed by everyone. Allot of time and planning is invested into the organization of National Engineering month, this year is no different. The Engineers Nova Scotia Student Affairs Committee is actively seeking volunteers to help coordinate the Annual Egg Drop Competitions. These competitions have become very popular and is now being held in 12 different Junior High Schools, with more than 1000 students participating. Would you like a professional Engineer to speak to your students about career options? The Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia would welcome the opportunity to send a Professional Engineer to your classroom to discuss with your students career opportunities in engineering, science and technology.
