Requirements for Registration (download document here)
An engineer practicing in Nova Scotia is required by law under the Nova Scotia Engineering Profession Act & By-Laws to be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (Engineers Nova Scotia). To be licenced as a professional engineer applicants must:
- be academically qualified
- have obtained sufficient acceptable engineering work experience in their area of qualification
- have an understanding of local practices and conditions
- be competent in the English language
- be of good character, and
- demonstrate an understanding of professional practice and ethics issues.
Academic Requirement
Applicants for licensure must meet the following academic qualifications requirement:
- An undergraduate degree in engineering accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), or
- An unaccredited undergraduate degree in engineering or science from a school, college or university recognized by Council, and successful completion of any required examinations.
If the Bachelor's degree is not accredited or is from a Country that does not have a reciprocal mobility agreement with Canada, the applicant's academic and experience qualifications will be assessed by the Board of Examiners. Applicants who do not hold degrees from CEAB accredited programs or recognized programs may demonstrate that they are academically qualified through an examination program as assigned by the Board of Examiners based on the Engineers Canada Examination Syllabus.
Experience Requirement
The experience requirement is four years of engineering experience approved by the Board of Examiners, with a minimum of one year in a North American environment. The experience must be documented on the Engineers Nova Scotia Experience Record form. It is very important that the experience records are signed by the applicant and the Supervisor/Employer where the experience was obtained.
English Language Requirement
When an applicant's first language is not English, proof of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English, is required.
Residency Requirement
The Nova Scotia Engineering Profession Act contains a residency clause which requires that applicants for Full membership hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status. Applicants without Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status may be eligible for a Licence to Practice membership, which contains essentially the same rights and privileges.
Application Requirements
The Board of Examiners requires the following documents officially translated into English:
1. Completed Application with all required fees and dues
2. Degree certificate
3. Original transcript(s) of marks from the University(s) attended
4. Course descriptions for the undergraduate Engineering Degree and any post grad Engineering Degrees.
5. Detailed Work History
